Samburu National Reserve, located in Northern Kenya, is renowned as one of the most sought-after Safari destinations in East Africa. Spanning a massive 165 square kilometres, the reserve borders the Ewaso Ng’iro River to the south, which divides it from Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Here, numerous rare species of animals such as Grevy Zebras, Somali Ostriches, Reticulated Giraffes, Gerenuks, and Beisa Oryxes inhabit the area, as well as a population of almost 900 Elephants. Predators such as Lions, Leopards, and Cheetahs can also be seen here, with a special mention of Kamunyak, the well-known Lioness that adopted an Oryx. Wild dogs are also frequently sighted in this unique conservation area, as well as a wide range of over 450 bird species.
The Samburu Laikipia Ecosystem is home to a wealth of wildlife, including the rare and unique “Special Five” animals of Samburu, such as the Grevy’s zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx. One of the most prevalent mammals here is the elephant, which is seen in large numbers. Additionally, other species such as Grant gazelles, Impalas, Waterbucks, Dik-diks, Hippos, Olive Baboons, Warthogs, Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Cape Buffalo, Hyenas, Elands, Jackals, Klipspringer, Mongooses and Bats can be found here. With over 450 species of birds recorded, this is also a great spot for birdwatchers. One of the more elusive animals, the Wild Dog, is also present in the area, though sightings are not common due to their large distribution range.
Samburu is home to some truly incredible adventures, including game viewing and bird watching – the varied climate and terrain of the area make for amazing wildlife spotting opportunities all year round. Why not join a Samburu cultural tour, and get a unique insight into the fascinating lifestyle of the Samburu people; a pastoralist and warrior tribe found in Kenya and across East Africa. Nature walks, camel trekking safaris, bush meals and sundowners are just some of the other exciting activities on offer in Samburu National Reserve.
