Tsavo West National Park, which is situated in the Coast Province of Kenya, spans an area of 9,065 square kilometres. It is divided from Tsavo East National Park by the A109 road Nairobi-Mombasa and a railway line. Together, Tsavo West and East, along with the connected ranches and reserves, make up the Tsavo Conservation Area. Tsavo West is a more favoured destination due to its wonderful scenery, Mzima Springs, abundant and diversified wildlife, well-maintained roads, rhino reserve, rock climbing opportunities, and guided treks along the Tsavo River. Tsavo West is maintained and managed by Kenya Wildlife Service.
The spectacular Mzima Springs, with its cascading fifty million gallons of crystalline water, and the Shetani lava flows, set the scene for the wild beauty of Tsavo West. Here, one can observe the magnificent savannah ecosystem, comprised of open grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia woodlands, interspersed with riverine vegetation and rocky ridges. Among the highlights of the park are the Poacher’s Lookout, where visitors can spot abundant wildlife, such as elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, cheetahs, and buffalos. Birdwatchers can enjoy a range of species, including the threatened corncrake and the near-threatened Basra Reed Warbler. Truly, Tsavo West is a paradise for nature lovers.
Tsavo National Park is home to the African Big 5 (Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Elephants and Buffaloes), making it one of the few protected areas in the country to house both species of Rhinos, Black and White. It boasts a plethora of scenic views, such as the remarkable work of volcanic activity that formed the awe-inspiring Yatta plateau and the Fifty million gallons of white crystal water that flow beneath the rocks. These are just some of the wonders of the Park.
